HOW DO WE FEED A PLANET APPROACHING 9 BILLION PEOPLE?

As the world’s population increases, so does our need for food. Yet even today, when we produce more food than ever before, one out of every nine people doesn’t get enough to eat. Others are living in “food deserts” — places that lack access to wholesome, affordable food. Along with the growing demand, climate stressors are affecting food sources from fisheries to farms.

Creative minds from all kinds of backgrounds are rethinking our food systems to meet these challenges. In California, two entrepreneurs hatched a way to fit the makings of a farm into a shipping container — a “farm from a box.” A Maryland teenager’s science project yielded an antibacterial paper that prevents food spoilage. Others are thinking about how to reduce the carbon dioxide pollution that comes from producing grains, dairy, and meat.
